In a climate where it is becoming increasingly difficult to talk to those who don’t share our views, what role does goth play? Transgressive and activist counterculture, or impartial music tribe? Does denying the political roots and inclinations of goth culture lend itself to infiltration by racist and sexist ideologies? This week I want to look at what makes goth culturally unique among its alternative peers, discuss how the implicit flexibility of goth can lead it to fold into other subcultural groupings such as punk as we will see in the scene from Mexico City, and look at how goth has the ability to adapt to a local environment while remaining identifiable as part of goth culture. We will also be reviewing the new album from Living Temples, sharing our sinister suggestions and more!

This month we are revisiting the topic of sexism within industrial music and culture. While Cemetery Confessions itself is specifically about goth, there’s no denying that there’s a historical propinquity of industrial and goth musically and culturally, and as such goths and industrialists often share experiences and spaces. We discuss misogyny historically, debate whether or not anything has changed, relate personal run ins with this behavior and a lot more. In a world where donald trump is president and subcultural music is ever more often taking a stand on ethics, political ideologies, and social justice issues a discussion examining the norms of our culture and the ontologies that come along with them is more relevant than ever.
